OGHS: We would like you to know what we are up to these days. As you know this Sunday, is One Great Hour of Sharing. For the past three weeks you have heard stories and information about what this money does around the world. Please consider a donation. Last year we sent a check to OGHS for $1,091.52.
Food shelf donations: We haven’t filled our basket much lately so we thought maybe we would set up a challenge. We are challenging the right side of the church (that would be the choir side) to the left side. From now until Easter Sunday there will be two baskets in the narthex. Depending on what side you sit on please put your donation in the correct basket. Let’s see how high we can stack those goodies!!
Work / Mission Trip: We are also in the process of gathering information on a possible mission trip. Please see our survey here.
Church World Service Depot: Again this year we will be a drop off point for the Church World Service kits. This event takes place the first week in May. They are badly in need of hygiene kits. In the next few weeks we will have information on what you can do to help us with a list of what you can provide.
Human Food Chain: The need for food during the summer is high as the children are out of school. We have been in contact with the director and asked if a June… Human Food Chain event would be more helpful than November. There are so many other organizations that do during the holidays we thought this might be a better time for us. They feel this is a good idea so stayed tuned. We have a tentative date of June 17th.
It sure will be warmer.
Enough for now but please, if you have something you might like to see our church become involved in, feel free to ask. The board would like to thank you all for the continued support you give.

Church School News
Spam, spam, spam, spam
No, not the canned meat. On the odd occasion, I hear from some of you that the church newsletter ends up in your spam folder in your email client.
Preventing the church emails from ending up in your spam folder is usually fairly simple. But not always. Patience and trial and error sometimes are required.
To start with, the easiest thing to do is to make sure that the church email address is in your address book, as many spam filters’ first line of defense is to only allow emails through that are from a known email address. The church newsletters are sent from peter@waterburyucc.com. (Please note, that I’ve changed this, as a result of this research. I formerly used my pplagge95@gmail.com account. I have learned that gmail domains are often used by spammers, and therefore more likely to be flagged than others. Our church domain specific address may work better in this regard.)
A possible easy solution is to go into your spam folder, find this church newsletter (because it has the new address) and mark it as “Not Spam.” In my gmail client, this can be done simply by right clicking on the email in your spam folder which then gives you choices — “Not Spam,” “Mark as Read,” and “Delete Forever.”
Because Spam is such a serious issue — once an email is removed or marked as spam on your end, it is quite difficult to reinstate. Call us at the church if that happens.
One last note — it is not always easy for me to know if newsletters are triggering spam alerts. Please let us know if you think you should be receiving a newsletter but are not. Also, note that we do not send out newsletters every Friday. That said, we rarely go two weeks in a row without sending something out, unless it’s August!
Thanks for your help with this.
Silent Auction – More details
The church is holding a Silent Auction Fundraising event in May (possible dates are May 18 or 20) and we need your help! The idea is to collect donations from church members and hold an evening event with the items on display, where everyone has the chance to bid (on paper) for their favorite items – highest bid takes the item home.
Here are some ideas for items to donate; tickets to a show; a round of golf; vacation rental; hand crafted items such as quilts; sweaters; or Christmas decorations; musical instrument lessons; home-cooked meals delivered to your door; services such as lawn mowing or snow shoveling. Or get together with friends and create a themed basket such as ‘coffee lovers’; kids games; gardener’s tools; etc.
We will also have food and music at the event so let us know if you want to contribute in that way.
Look for the silent auction table at coffee time right after church over the next few weeks where you can sign up to donate an item. Or call or email Jill or June with any questions.
