Chili Supper

chili2017For several years (2008 – 2014 to be exact) we’ve had a chili cook-off featuring both local restaurateur contestants and aspiring church gourmands.  I believe that Charlie Grenier was the last overall winner beating out the likes of The Alchemist and Moose Meadow Lodge.  And before that Dean King.
The problem is that we’ve switched tactics and are now asking local restaurants for their donation to our Chicken Pie fundraiser, a much more significant source of income than the Chilympiad ever was.
But because that was so much fun, and because we have such excellent chili makers in our midst, a few of us have suggested resurrecting it on a non-fundraiser basis, more like a potluck basis.  Following our success with the post annual meeting potluck, we’d like to propose a post worship chili potluck, complete with an informal vote at the end for the year’s chili queen or king.
We have decided to make March 26 chili potluck day.  Bring your chili in a crock pot or in a pot for the oven so it’ll stay warm, drop it off in the kitchen before hand and stay after for a little good fun and good hot food.
The church will provide a salad and drinks.

Mission Project Opportunity

I few weeks ago, the Rev. Charlie Magill was in worship, who is quite involved with mission work in his denomination, the United Methodist Church.  He announced that he was heading up a mission trip to continue assistance to New Jersey, still suffering from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy.
Here is further information from him.  You may click on his name at the bottom to contact him directly.

There are still 3000 families in New Jersey that have not been able to return to there homes because of the damages from hurricane Sandy.  We are organizing a trip to help rebuilding efforts there.
The New Jersey Conference disaster recovery organization asks each volunteer to pay $15 per night for lodging and contribute $100 toward materials, so I’m estimating that the costs would be about $350 per person for the week.  We would car pool down on Sunday, April 23 and return April 29.
Right now I need an approximate number of people who would like to go.  As usual, we probably won’t know exactly what the work is until a week or two before we go, but it will be doing whatever needs to be done to get people back in their homes after the flooding and wind damage of hurricane Sandy.
Blessings to all,
Charlie Magill

Looking for a Twin Bed (Found!)

In my role as the manager of the Good Neighbor Fund, I occasionally am requestedtwin-jenny-lind-coral-bed for help with things that require more than just some money.  Over conversations about rent, a local, single dad told me his daughter was sleeping on the floor.  I asked him if I could ask around, as they are often available for the asking, and he said I could try.
The bed is for a young girl, so, even a child’s bed would be fine.  If you have one that is in good shape that you’re trying to get rid of, please email me.  I’d love to think of his daughter as sleeping in a real bed.
Thanks for checking this out.  We found a bed already!

MONTPELIER– In response to the current administration’s ban on muslims, Vermont community members are mobilizing in solidarity with Muslim, Refugee and Immigrant Communities. Over 700 people will join in a vigil at the State House on Wednesday, February 1st at 6 p.m. in solidarity with the many refugees and immigrants impacted by the unlawful and immoral executive orders issued last week. All are welcome to attend.
People from around the state will meet on the steps of the State Capitol to speak out against hatred and intolerance and call on the larger community to stand together in opposition of the Trump administration’s radical, anti-immigrant, and anti-muslim agenda.
In just one week, Trump has called to accelerate the already extreme militarization of border communities and expand racial profiling and religious discrimination. In both word and deed, the Trump administration has made it clear that it favors a white nationalist vision of America over one that values inclusiveness, equality, and justice for all.
Across the nation, thousands of people have come together in response to this brazen attack on muslim and immigrant communities. Organizers of the vigil call on all people to stand up for what is just, organize with local, state and national organizations and take action to stop this ban and further attempts to criminalize their communities.
Speakers at the vigil will include: faith leaders, individuals and families impacted by the executive actions, local and state organizations, as well as community members. Their voices will bring hope, for they rise to uphold civil liberties and human rights. They speak out  against hate and intolerance, discriminatory immigration laws, mass incarceration, over policing, the criminalization of communities of color, deportations, and border militarization.
Vermont’s residents cannot and will not remain silent because a community united is a strong community.
