Strawberry Festival 2024 – Sign up to Help!

Preparations for the 48th Strawberry Festival are well underway and you can help grease the skids and make it all go forward! We are delighted that this lovely tradition is back up and running after a four year pandemic-induced hiatus. Last year’s supper was as well attended as any before the pandemic. We expect good weather and good crowds!

This year our non-profit partner is Habitat for Humanity! 20% of our profits will be donated to this extraordinary organization which is establishing a retail presence in Waterbury this year: https://www.centralvermonthabitat.org/restore.html

Could you serve on the Board of Finance?

Short answer: Yes!

According to our bylaws the Board of Finance has 4 members. Currently the board has 3 members and we would love to have another voice in the mix. The board meets every month usually via Zoom, though come budget preparation time, an occasional in person meeting. We currently meet on a a mid-month Wednesday evening, but are flexible and would be happy to accommodate your schedule if we can.

Here’s the bylaw:

The Board of Finance will provide oversight to the Trustees, who will have full charge of the investment of all trust funds and the purchase and sale of all securities of the Church. They will direct the Treasurer in payment of Church expenses. They will segregate and maintain any separate or special funds and accounts. They will provide an annual report covering each calendar year at or immediately prior to each Annual Meeting. They will pay to the Financial Secretary such sums of money (not to exceed One Thousand dollars ($1,000) in any one calendar year for any one purpose) as may be authorized by vote of the Church Council.

The Board of Finance will supervise and coordinate the activities of those members who serve as Treasurer and Financial Secretary. It will assist the Stewardship Committee and fundraising ministries. It will present the budget to Church Council prior to the Annual Meeting of the Church.

If you think we might like to be involved, speak to any of the board members, Diane Leavitt, Barbara Barra, or Cathy Shires. You can also talk to Peter, of course! Thank you.

The Lent “Bending” Floral Displays

In order from top left to bottom right:

  • Bending our way through Lent — “We are afflicted but not crushed, bent over with burdens but not broken!”
  • Faith and Uncertainty — “Do not conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your intellect, so that you may discern what is the will of God.”
  • Light as a feather — “Love bears all things . . . “
  • Dogging — “Yes, Rabbi, but even the dogs under the table eat the family’s scraps.”
  • Palm Sunday — “God so generously loved the world that he placed his only son here, so that everyone who has confidence in him may not be lost or be destroyed but may have eternal life.”

Thank you Ned Davis for all your magnificent work on these beautiful Lenten reminders that we bend but don’t break, we seek continually without the illusion we arrive, and in and by love we bear all things.
